Remote Backup Frequently Asked questions
Q:
What is Remote Backup?
A:
Compu-Cure’s Remote backup is a service that allows your
computer to safely and securely store important files
automatically in case of failure or disaster.
Q:
Where are the files stored?
A:
The files are transferred over the internet and stored on our
servers in our secure facility.
Q:
So you keep my files, can you access my data?
A:
No, we have no access or ability to directly access your files.
The files are encrypted using the highest levels of encryption
available; they are then compressed to save time in transfer and
stored on our secure servers.
Q:
What is encryption and how do I know my files are safe?
A:
Encryption is a process of changing the content of a file using
mathematical formulas that essentially makes the files into
gibberish. A key file is necessary to decrypt the files. You and
your company are the only ones with this key.
Q:
My company has certain legal requirements when storing files.
How do I know these are being followed?
A:
Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup Software will compress and encrypt
data before sending it to the Compu-Cure Servers. We have
ensured that our service meets all of the final requirements to
provide a HIPPA compliant service.
Q:
So if I lose a file what happens then?
A: Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup service provides each covered
system with a copy of the Remote Backup software that will
easily allow you to select files to restore 24 hours a day. This
software will allow you to select files and restore them as
often as necessary.
Q:
What if I have a major problem, like my computer looses all my
data?
A:
This is the main reason for doing good backups. Computer failure
can cost thousands of dollars in lost business and labor to
recover the work you have already done. With Compu-Cure’s Remote
backup, you can just install all of your programs on a new
system and, using your encryption key, restore all of your data.
Q:
How do I know my backups are happening?
A:
Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup automatically sends an e-mail
reporting on successful, incomplete, or errors during the backup
process.
Q:
How often can I backup my files?
A:
Normally most clients find that once each business day is
sufficient, this is normally scheduled after business hours as
the service does use your internet connection and may affect
your internet speed. There is no limit imposed on how often you
backup with this service.
Q:
I currently backup using a tape drive in my computer. That
should be OK right?
A:
There are a few problems with tape backup. Let us break this
down a little;
Problem 1:
If the tapes are stored on your site and a disaster happens,
like a fire or flood, the tapes can be destroyed along with the
computers.
Solution:
Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup keeps your data off site on our
secure servers.
Problem
2:
Tapes can be damaged or wear out over time. Tapes can go bad
just sitting in a box and you have no way of knowing when they
will fail.
Solution:
Compu-Cure’s experienced technicians constantly monitor our
servers for integrity, safety, and security.
Problem 3:
Tapes have an inherent limit to their storage capacity, once
that is exceeded you need not only a new tape, but a new drive
to handle a larger tape.
Solution:
Compu Cure’s Remote Backup servers have been designed to
increase capacity to meet any need. Though our service is
charged by needed capacity, if your needs change you can upgrade
quickly.
Problem 4:
Restoring an older version of a file can take hours. Tapes need
to be indexed before files can be restored and this can be an
extremely long time.
Solution:
File restore is a quick and simple process that uses MS Windows
interface to quickly select the file and retrieve it.
Problem 5:
Tapes are laborious, to provide a good backup routine using tape
you need to change the tape every day, rotate the tapes so as
not to overwrite data, and transport them off site.
Solution:
Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup resides on your computer as a small
icon on your start menu. At the prescribed time, it pops up and
scans the files for changes, encrypts and compresses the
selected files, and sends them to our secure servers, with no
intercession from you.
Q:
What happens if there is a failure at Compu-Cure’s location?
A:
Our facility is located in a secure building and constantly
monitored for failures, but there is always a possibility of
prolonged outage from storms or natural disasters. We have an
alternate location that would pick up the backup duties while we
work to restore service in our primary location.
Q:
How much does all this cost?
A:
You will need license for each computer you are backing up.
Pricing is based on a monthly subscription of:
Desktop:
$3.95 + $0.50/GB per month
Server:
$6.95 + $0.50/GB per month
Most of our clients find that being invoiced annually is much
easier. If you choose to pay annually we provide a discount
equal to one month of service.
Summary;
With Compu-Cure’s Remote Backup there are no setup fees, no
hardware to buy, and with our automatic backups, no additional
management required to oversee it all. These take the hassle and
cost out of backup.
